iACADEMY's ST(ART) Exhibit

by - 9:44:00 PM

In an instant, you'd see big blue blocks stacked together, but if you look closely, you'd see art............ Literally.

These "artsy" blocks are actually part of iACADEMY's exhibit "START". START or Social Transformation through ART is the theme for this year's exhibit. We spoke to President and CEO Ms. Vanessa Tanco and she said that holding exhibits are part of iACADEMY's efforts in showcasing the work of their talented students. I could tell they were really proud of them (if you've seen their artworks in person, you would understand. Haha!)

Just a backstory: I first heard about iACADEMY when I attended the Graphic Expo back when I was in high school. They had a representative who was inviting students like me to check out their school. I remember I was really interested that I've even brought up the idea to my parents. For some reason I cannot remember, I never got the chance to go to iACADEMY (AWWW) so you can imagine when I saw their exhibit I had a lot of "WHAT IF" thoughts all over again. Haha! Nonetheless, I was happy to be there and I know my heart will always be in support for the arts and iACADEMY itself. (And that's why I'm really encouraging my younger brother, Josef to go enroll in iACADEMY after high school. As early as 10 years old, he does animation clips on Adobe Flash - something I'd never figure on my own. Haha!)

Their START exhibit was held last weekend, March 5-6, 2016 at the North Court of Rockwell Power Plant Mall in Makati. If you missed out, no worries! Here are some snaps from their exhibit:

iACADEMY has three schools: the School of Computing for those into Computer Science, Game Development and IT (Web) Development; the School of Business for those into Business Administration Financial Management and Marketing and Advertising; and (my favorite) the School of Design for those into Animation, Fashion Design and Technology and Multimedia Arts and Design. They offer short courses, undergraduate programs and senior high school programs.

Before the exhibit was opened, there were already a lot of students around "this" area. Naturally, I took a peek and I saw some students drawing on screens. I knew it was possible to draw digitally but I've never seen anyone actually do it so you can guess I was a bit struck. They were so good, they hardly had any erasures. What made me more curious was the program they were using.

During the opening, they had a short program to welcome the guests and award one of their students, Juilian, for his outstanding work.

Ms. Vanessa Tanco, along with the Board of Governors of iACADEMY, pulls down the covers during the countdown:

You have to admit, even the concept of the blocks was really well-thought of. According to Ms. Vanessa Tanco, it was the project and idea of Ms. Raquel Perez, Vice President for Corporate Communications, and Mr. Ryan Abeledo, Head of iACADEMY’s School of Design. The blocks stacked together represented art as building blocks of society. And if you take a closer look (again), the art works represent relevant social issues in the Philippines.

They're all open to your interpretation, of course, but most of the artworks' emerging themes were about the government, social media, gender issues and equality, poverty. It's nice to know that their students not only create for the sake of aesthetics but to send out messages as well.

Other than their artworks, they had containers with colored balls wherein people could put balls to issues they find relevant to them and/or would need more attention. This was a fun way of getting people to participate.

Needless to say, the place was jam packed with students and guests. It was a bit hard for me to move around but I really enjoyed the exhibit. I'm also very happy that today, art is being celebrated and being given much attention.

If you missed out on their exhibit last weekend, you can still check out their page for more events. I personally hope they have more exhibits (not just once a year) and in more new places like in the South. In the words of iACADEMY, "DARE TO BE DIFFERENT. BE A GAME CHANGER!" See you and let me know what you think in the comments below!

  1. Very nicely designed boxes and stacked pretty well. I have boxes here but no way are they close to those beautiful creations. Hehehe. Mine are office boxes. I did stack them rather randomly when I moved in to a new place and they looked awful. :)
