As a student, it can get pretty stressful. There’s always those projects to do, papers to write, deadlines we have to meet, meetings we have to be in to, quizzes to prepare for and exams to ace. And the truth is, it’s just stress - there’s nothing really pretty about it. And I mean, nothing. With that, I often neglect to take care of my skin. Honestly, I’m just the water-soap-face kind of girl but I don’t wear make-up (which is good). But I too had my fair share of skin problems. As a teenager, we get pimples (Noooo huhu) and for me -being a swimmer- I have uneven skin tone. After my visit to Luminisce - I realized a lot of things. One of those is that I really have to give time to take care of my skin. I guess I’m lucky I have fair skin but I have to really give time to keep it that way. I’m really thankful too that I went to Luminisce and lucky for you, I’m sharing with you my new found favorite place.

Hello again my fellow book nerds, you heard me right. Bianca Gonzalez is launching her first ever book entitled "Paano Ba Toh?!". Originally Bianca is known as a model and TV host. But I never knew she could write (and I mean really write a book). So I did a little research (research meaning googling it at Wikipedia) and I was surprised that she started as a writer. Her first job with ABS-CBN was a brainstormer for their creative development group. She also is an editor at Meg Magazine and writer of the Sunday Lifestyle's column, Ten Things You Should Know About at Philippine Star.
Hello everyone! Christmas is just around the corner and lucky for all you readers and bookworms, I have a special surprise for you from our friends at Buqo. ‘Tis the season of giving and, yet again, the Christmas spirit brings out the generous side in most (if not all) of us. What you would love to know is that the people at Buqo have also contracted the generosity bug that’s been going around! So to mark our very first Christmas, they have prepared a little something (quite awesome, actually) just for you!
Our friends at Buqo want you and I to
re-experience that “childhood” feeling of anticipating, of finding your gift
under the Christmas tree, up to the moment of opening it to your heart’s
delight. But this time, allow them to do it digitally (they're an app after all). So my dear
friends, I to present to you “36 Days
of Buqo Christmas”. Yes, that’s 36 days! Because 12 days just isn’t enough to be generous!
A few months back, "Showered with Coco" trended on twitter and (yes!) I was part of it. And who is this Coco? Coco is Dial's newest product. I'm glad I shower using Dial's Coconut Water. As a university student, it gets pretty hectic. A normal day would include commuting to the university, walking from the dormitory, transferring to classrooms, walking again to buildings, doing my homework, exercising (it's a must!), eating (you have to squeeze that in) and such. But thankfully, I have Dial's Coconut Water Soap and Wash -it can get me through the day still feeling, looking and smelling fresh. For the full product review, read on.
What started out as an idea to create shirts for bookworms, The Dream Shirt has finally marked its 2.5K likers after a year of operating online. With more and more fangirls and fanboys finding out about the online shop, The Dream Shirt is planning to have its relaunch come 2015, which includes creating a line for locally published books, releasing more collections, and a collaboration giveaway with Fandom Trinkets PH.
The
Dream Shirt is an online shop that offers made-to-order shirts, with prints
that features quotes and designs based on different books. Each design is
printed on a cotton shirt in vinyl or via heat transfer. As of today, most of
their selections are based from Young Adult novels like John Green’s ‘Looking
for Alaska’ and ‘Fault in our Stars’. They also print designs based on the
popular dystopian novels such as the infamous Hunger Games trilogy and
Divergent. Although their current fan base is consisted of young people and
fanatics of YA masterpieces, The Dream Shirt is planning to target a larger
market, tapping in the bookworm crowd in general by providing designs that are
based on the classics, fiction novels, and the like. The designs are slated to
be released early next year, along with their official relaunch.
I'm not an art student but I wish I was. Lucky, I was able to join an art trip around some museums. We went to the Yuchengo Museum, National Museum, Metropolitan Museum and Pinto Art Gallery. And I know, based on the title of this post, you can guess what my favorite site was. So yeah, we went there and I really appreciated the gallery. It was so big that I wasn't able to visit a few rooms. And I almost missed some too. They also have a lot of famous paintings of pinoy artists. Other than that, they didn't just show pantings but they had sculptures, objects and even some installation art exhibits.
Overall, it was beautiful. And since I cannot really "blog" about the gallery because describing beauty is hard enough and we have the convenience of pictures that speaks a thousand words, I can only show you pictures of the gallery. So enjoy!
Yayyy! So today, I decided that I blog about my boyfriend and I's eat-dates for the love of food and blogging. So here to start this series is my very first post. Enjoy!
Horaaaah. I know this seems like a very late post because I last went to Ted's a few months ago but I was recently looking at some pictures then I realized I haven't blogged about it.. ever. It was such a good experience so why not, right? And I remember that a lot of my Facebook friends asked me where we ate (seeing all the pictures) so here it is! :)
My boyfriend and I were planning where we should eat for Valentines and we wanted it to be really special. Then one day, he told me he was browsing through his news feed when he saw that Ted's was having a buffet promo on Valentines. Not only that but they we're going to have it in a garden setting. With that, he reserved a table for two. On the night itself, I was really happy. the place looked so amazing and the food? WORTH IT. We were a bit early so we got to take pictures around. This place is the private garden of Ted's. It is located just at the back of their restaurant.

Hello everyone! I'm finally writing a post about tips on how to pass the Tutoring Skills Assessment for RareJob. I'm writing this because I usually receive emails asking for tips and there are times that I get so caught up with school that I wasn't able to email back those people (and I'm very sorry about that!). Other times, some of their emails go to my spam folder. If you do have questions, I suggest you leave me a comment saying that you emailed me or you can ask me directly here as I check my blog more often. And if you have no idea of what I'm talking about, feel free to read this first.
Anyways, here is the list of tips I usually send the people who personally email me. When I was applying for RareJob, I couldn't find any useful tips on the internet. Thus I came up with my own list.
TIPS ON PASSING THE TSA
1. Strictly no dead air
My friend and I tried out for RareJob almost the same time but we didn't know it. He only told me after his TSA. Sadly, he did not make it. The main reason was because there was dead air during the whole lesson. If the student cannot understand or follow, ask him/her or give him/her clues. Be a little humorous (but in place) to avoid dear air. Also be prepared of what your student might say, be ready to catch his response and think ahead.

Hello! And welcome again to another post from our "saving money series". And today's post is all on cleaning one's closet. For us girls, it's a tough and tiring job (because we have a lot of clothes) - and for the guys, well if you also have a "bunch" of clothes, you can clean your closet as well. So it's optional. Most people do not like the idea of cleaning their closet, it can get tiring as I said earlier and well, sometimes we don't really have a system in cleaning it. Lucky for you, this post covers how we can clean our closet using the 5S. No this is the not the iPhone 5S - this is the 5S Japanese methodology. I first heard this when I was in my high school, our English teacher would always ask us to do the 5S before we start our classes. Also, as an Industrial Engineering student, I heard about the 5S again this college. It is very important to our major as we also incorporate this practice in our daily lives. I hope this helps you finally clean out your closet in a much easier and systematic way.
Joining us, as always is Pusheen cat *yay*. So let's get started (you can refer to the graphic below). First, we define what the 5S is. Well, the 5S started in Japan. It is the acronym of 5 Japanese words - Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke. The 5S methodology of creating and maintaining a well organised, clean and highly effective environment. You can learn more about it through here.
Today's tip is all about food planning. This is one of the most effective ways to save money. [And an added bonus, if you plan a healthy diet, you can lose weight. :)] I read that when a person doesn't plan or even have an idea of what he or she wants to eat, there is a tendency that he/she spends more money. Why? Well, there is no limited budget. Unlike a person who plans his/her meals, there is a budget. And when there is a budget, there is saving.
So first things first, decide on how much you are going to spend for one meal a day. You could also decide on how much a day. You have to come up with your own budget. It is up to you. And if you can cook food, then go. I stay in an apartment so I have a cooker and a heater. What my boyfriend and I would do is that we would buy groceries for the week then cook them every lunch time. Believe me, it is a lot cheaper to cook your own food. One of my favourites is the chicken drummers or wingers that we buy. In the grocery, it costs around 70-80 pesos for a pack. The pack we buy has 9 pieces. If we decide to buy chicken outside (outside meaning the fast food restaurants or any restaurant, really), it would cost us around 50-100 pesos for one meal. With the grocery, we can eat up to two to three servings depending on our appetite. It really is cheaper. So if you can cook your own food, then try it. And for those of you who cannot, then not to worry. You can always plan your meals.
And speaking of planning meals, below here is a "food planner" I created. (except for the Pusheen cat- credits to the real owner!). This is on a weekly basis. If you like, you could save this and print this. Use this to plan your meals. If you have an eating buddy (eating buddy = someone you always eat with), then plan it with him or her. The planner below covers the whole week, yes you heard me - Monday to Sunday. I also included the usual breakfast, lunch and dinner. And in case you have a healthy appetite (just like me), you can throw in some snacks or brunch, more snacks and midnight snacks.
If you notice the boxes for every meal, it is divided into two. On the left side, you can write the particular meal or food that you plan to eat. Beside it, you can put your budget or if you are not sure how much your food will cost, then you can put it after. So, it will become your expense tracker.
Also, you don't have to be too strict on yourself. Have some meals where you can freely choose. You can write "random meal" or "cheat day". Overall, it really is up to you on how you want to maximize the planner (and I hope you do!). And for those of you who prefer a black and white version so that you can have it photocopied - don't worry. I also have one for you:
Anyways, I hope you found today's post helpful. If you did, please let me know and leave me a comment. :) See you at the next post! Cheers and happy saving!
Before you start anything, any project, thesis, recipe, basically anything - you need to have a goal. I cannot stress to you how important a goal is. I'm sure you all have had your fair share of goals. And it may be August and we're nearing the end of this year but it is never too late to create new goals. So before we start our project to save money. Start with the question "why am I saving money?". For example:
"Why are you saving money?"
"I am saving money because I want/need to take a vacation in another country with my friends."
"Why are you saving money?"
"I want/need to buy my self a new phone."
"Why are you saving money?"
"I want/need to have money I can invest."
So these are all possible answers to the question. Ask yourself. Once you have an answer, you now have a reason to save or something we like to call a goal. However, goals are not complete without a "due" date. You need to know when you need to finish or have achieved your goal. Long-term or short term, every goal has to have a finish date. If you do not have a finish date, you may even forget it and decide not to continue. Also, having a date, could give the good kind of pressure. (I hope).
In choosing a due date, you first have to think about yourself. I want you to think carefully and decide based on your capability in completing in this challenge. You may opt to also pressure yourself a little more, if you think you usually achieve your goals in 3 months, then challenge yourself and make it two. Again, it depends on you.
Lastly, since our series is all about saving money. What's a goal without monetary value? Estimate the money you are going to need to have that vacation with your friends. Research how much does that new phone you always wanted cost. Know the amount of money you want to invest in the stock market. It's all about the monetary value. Finish writing your goal with an estimate of how much you are going to need. If you find yourself needing more in the future, then go ahead and don't be shy to adjust it. If you don't, then the better.
So that's all for today. I hope that you found this helpful. Let me know what your goals are in the comment box below. Happy goal writing! :)
/WRITTEN IN A COLLEGE STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE/
When we say the word "college"- words like "expenses","tuition fee" and "money" come in to mind. Why? Well, the answer is simple. It is because without money- you cannot survive the university. We all know how expensive education is. And I'm pretty sure we also know how expensive it can get during the school year. We have a lot of homework, projects, materials we need to buy, field trips we have to go to, food we need to eat, places to go to, money when we take public transportation to get to places. And thus comes the saying, Money doesn't grow on trees. Although I really wish it did, it's not easy to get money. We have to work hard for the money. And who earns the money we use for our school? It is usually the fruits of labour of our parents, family, relatives and sometimes by you, yourself.

As I began my stay here in the university, I've become more conscious of my expenses. I don't just spend on food or materials, etc. I always see to it I get my money's worth and set aside money for saving. And I noticed that I always do an accounting of my expenses. I try not to go overboard than the usual. People always say that it's okay to spend just a little. Sure it is, but in a way - I rather save my money. I love my father for teaching me this. He also inspires me to save my money and put it in investments for my future, which I should write a post also about. (But I need more consulting from my dad as he is the real expert). But all I can say is, the younger you start investing, the better. Sad to say- Filipinos are not very futuristic and we don't often think about the long run.
So what am I proposing? Well, saving is very important. You may not see the bigger picture yet of saving but I can assure you that you won't regret it. You never know when you might need the money you have or will save. And it is really important that you have back-up money. And in the future, I do hope you do get to see the bigger picture. But today, I start a new blog series called the:
As the title implies, this series will be all about how you can save money. I'm not an expert in saving money but I do know a few ways, you can save money and maybe, help you make it grow (although that's another story). I hope you stay tuned and together, we can save money. Let's changed the Filipino perspective and think about our future in the the long run. I'm sure your life will be changed. Any thoughts, comments and violent reactions? Leave me a comment below :)

*Yay! This seems easy. I'll just check the top 10 songs of my iTunes.*
*checks the top10 recently*
*sees nothing*
*remembers that she uses spotify*
...and how great is that. Thus the death of this post. Just kidding. Anyways, here are my top 10 songs (they are not necessarily the most played songs on my phone..or is it? lol). Going through these songs, I know why I like them. Some of them hold stories. Some help me remember good times. Some just make me want to dance (which is really rare). Some are my favourite because the lyrics just speaks to me. Hmmm. Now that I think of it, I think I should really do a post on why these songs are my favourite. I think that would make a great post. You, my dear reader, will finally dig deep into my past... or not. Just kidding. It depends. We'll see. But hopefully, I do get to write about it.
And since I am catching up on my posts for this month, here is another post I hope you enjoy.
My mom always makes us (me and my siblings) drink water... with lemons. I loved it. It tastes good and I feel healthy though I never understood the reason behind it. I mean why do we put lemons in our water? Thus, being the computer junkie that I am (YET AGAIN), I did googled researched about it. I wasn't surprised that there were a lot of benefits. You can refer to the sources below if you want to read more about it but for now, here are the top 5 common benefits of drinking lemon water. And if you never tried it, I do hope I can change your mind and you can start feeling healthy. So yeah, enjoy!
Supports the immune system
Did you know that lemons are high in Vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin C is great for fighting colds and flu while potassium stimulates the brain & nerves to function. It also helps control blood pressure. Nutritionist Hedge says lemon also enhances the body’s ability to absorb iron, an important nutrient for a healthy immune system. Other than that, it is also a great source of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. You can drink a lot of lemon water to cure a common cold.
Freshens your breath
I bet you didn't know that did you? This has got to be one of my favourite benefits. According to my research, the antiseptic qualities in lemon juice help kill off bad bacteria in the mouth by acting as a disinfectant. It is also healthier and is said to keep you more awake than coffee (which is rumoured - I'm not sure how true- to give you bad breath).
Helps with weight loss
Okay fine, I am also loving this benefit. Lemons have high pectin fiber, a soluble fibre commonly found in citrus fruits. It helps fight hunger cravings, making the person lose their appetite Pectin helps stave off hunger as the fibre creates a feeling of fullness. It also has been shown that the more alkaline in a person's body, the faster they lose weight. This is perfect. You don't have to spend money on all those juices that claim to help you lose weight when the only thing you lose is your appetite. I say, go for lemon water - it's natural. :)
Clears skin
You heard me right my friend. Lemon water helps clear our skin. The vitamin C helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. They are great for fighting skin ageing. Its antioxidant properties help fight free radical damage, which is responsible for the symptoms of ageing. “Vitamin C is required in the synthesis of amino acids into collagen and the job of collagen and connective tissue is to hold things tight and protect our skin tissue.” Also, on a non-related note, lemon water helps maintain the health of the eyes and helps fight against eye problems.
Balances pH
Yes, lemons are acidic on their own but inside our bodies they're alkaline (the citric acid does not create acidity in the body once metabolized). As you wellness warriors know, having a alkaline body is really the key to good health. “Lemon water is very alkalising and most of us have acidic bodies,” Chevalley Hedge says. “Educated foodies still think of lemons as being acidic when they are quite alkalising.”
Two simple ingredients packed with all the goodness, be sure to have a cup of lemon water daily. And I promise you, just like me - you will not only feel healthier but you will be healthier. Comment down below if you will start drinking lemon water. Yay! :)
Hello again dear readers. Sorry if I haven’t been updating my blog lately. I’ve been very busy with school and we didn’t have any internet connection at the apartment. I’m only online because I bought myself a pocket wifi I can use. Anyways, today’s post is literally two weeks late. I was originally writing a draft of it but school (yes, I’m blaming school) got in the way so it was only till today that I finished writing this post. I hope you do enjoy!
We talked about anti-bucket lists in the past but today I just wanna share this place my boyfriend and I went to. I posted pictures after our anniversary and a lot of my friends have been asking where is this *awesome* place. And lucky for you, I’m going to share it (HAHA). We went to Extreme Sports Philippines. They have two branches. The original branch is in Puerto Galera and this newly found branch is in Pansol, Laguna. You can check their website here. (You’re welcome). I don’t have much to say but it was really fun. If you’re looking for your not-so-usual outdoor activity, then this my friend, is that place for you! They have mudkarts, paintball, ATVs, zipline, sticky wall and a go kart racing track. Since the site was located inside the resort (La Vista Resort) - there were also a lot of pools and water slides just incase you want to take a dip after all the extreme sports. The place was really big and the staff was really friendly and accommodating. Other than that, the price is reasonable. You can check their packages on their website. One last thing, just don’t forget to bring sun block (which we forgot huhu), water, extra clothes, towel and bath stuff and you’re ready to go. I really enjoyed and I hope you will / did too. :) If you like what you read, comment below!
Have you ever found yourself googling something like this? Have you found something that could help you? Well, I have good news for you!
I quote this from my father. Like any normal person, we want to be healthy and wealthy. Getting there isn't as easy but we will be glad to help you. (And no, he didn't ask me to put this up on my blog if that's what you're thinking) I did this for myself. I'm not even sure if he can read this but you see, I've seen him help a lot of people - which really is what he and his team does. There are no pyramiding and networking (I've seen a lot of those kind of "businesses" nowadays and I won't namedrop here because I know they'll just go all defensive - but here is my unpopular opinion). And as for scams? I almost fell into one. Good thing I always had this thing for researching about the company before trying it out. And luckily, I saved myself money and time. I'm also blessed with the opportunity to teach with RareJob (if you haven't read about it, you can read it here) as I know in order to teach, you have to past tests and they're really selective when it comes to their tutors.
So yes, I'm really thankful for that. Anyways, my dad is teaching me and my siblings to save and really prepare for the future and I'm really thankful for that. Schools can only teach you how to be good at somethings and your subjects but they don't prepare you, financially. If you're willing to give this a try, leave me a comment below or email me and I can direct you to my dad. He'll be happy to help, after all, helping other people is the greatest reward of them all. Together, we can live life to the fullest! :)

Yay! Aloha. Today, I attended my very first Cinemalaya forum series. This is very much different with watching the films - of course - because you get to experience the film itself. Some speakers also were involved with this year's films so they were able to share experiences, tips and their contributions in making the particular film. It was really such a good experience.
There were also a lot of students who attended the forum - majority were students actually. Some of the topics discussed were the aesthetics of the digital image, the principal of photography, post-production and sound-design. My favourite part would have to be (surprisingly) the last module for today which is sound design. I am a big fan of music and sound effects and ever since I have been editing videos, I tend to neglect sound effects. Sure, I would put music - but after hearing the speakers presentations and experiences - I realized how important sound really is to the audience.
Although when we watch movies, we don't really notice the sounds as we are more concentrated at the talents or for some of us the cinematography or effects. But really, when you think of it - the sounds bring the movie. The sounds make sure you feel the feeling that the director wants you to feel during the movie. It's amazing. We should also give credit to our music scorers and the people in charge of the sound (sorry - not really sure what to call them.)

Overall, the cinemalaya forum series was a blast. It was really such a good learning experience. I never knew there were a lot to a film than just the actress and the story. It really is such a great effort by the whole production team. (Of course, I would have known that if I was taking an arts or film course but I'm an engineering student - so best to understand to me hahaha). I also can say that after this experience I have gained a better appreciation and understanding of film and film making. And especially to those who make indie films, hats off to those people. For the love of film and Filipinos, they create films even in their own expense. As said earlier during the forum series, this was the hardest year of the cinemalaya in terms of getting funds. But hey, it happened. I heard some director's producer pulled out the last minute so the director himself had to use his own money to fund his film and that really is just wow - true sacrifice. I hope that soon, with the times changing, we can also have deeper appreciation for these indie films and the film makers. And that the government would give priority somehow. I'm not expecting the government to make this a priority but somehow - I wish we could get the government to support this. Because this is our culture. Indie films, theatre shows, anything of the arts - is Filipino culture. And sometimes, our culture is not clear to us (and I probably have so much feels related to that which I hope to make another post about soon). But yeah, for those who are aspiring film makers out there (like me hihi) and even those who don't wish to be film makers, I would still highly recommend the cinemalaya forum series! You can really learn a lot and I'm sure you'll enjoy and have a deeper appreciation for films and film making. Sulit na sulit yung 300 (student discount). And I hope to be back next year to learn more. :) Any thoughts? How was your cinemalaya / cinemalaya forum series experience? Leave me a comment below!
Everybody talks about their bucket lists and the things they really want to do in the future but nobody ever talks about the things they don't want to do. Thus, I came up with a list - some thing like the usual bucket list but completely opposite. This is a list of things I never intend of doing (this includes things I've already done but won't ever want to do again). Enjoy!
- eat wasabi thinking it was some sort of vegetable
- get a tattoo or date anyone with a tattoo (sorry, but it's just a no-no for me)
- play with fireworks
- eat insects on purpose (even if it was cooked.. never again)
- walk through the flood :(
- sit through boring seminars
- drive a manual car (i know what you're thinking.. don't judge me)
JULY 29
I had an amazing day today at EDSA Shang Ri-La hotel. My orgmates and I attended this free *but per-invite* forum by Accenture. I learned a lot today (horaaah). The speaker was a professor from MIT and he was really smart and funny. In a way, I wanted to shift from my course to computer science (which was originally one of my dream courses next to the arts). The world is so digital today that you can find everything and anything you need online. That also explains my online job. (If you haven't read about it, you can read it here!) Anyways, Accenture also had an exhibit of one the cutting-edge technologies. One of the coolest gadgets that were on display, was the google glass. (picture on the left: Me wearing the google glass). I'm not gonna tell you how cool it was cause I'm pretty sure you know it already but can you just imagine how hi-tech our generation and world will be in the future? I can. And it's gonna be pretty exciting. Thank you Accenture for this opportunity for learning even outside our classroom. :)
Although recently I saw a post of this blogger saying she was disappointed with the macarons she bought in Tous Les Jours, I wasn't. I don't like my macarons - or anything else - to be too sweet. I think these we're just right and heavenly. And I now understand why macarons are so expensive. They're describe to be the one of the hardest pastries to make. And then you'd probably ask yourself, what is the hype all about? What are macarons and why are they so popular?
Well, lucky for you - here are some fun facts about macarons!
It'd like to thank my boyfriend for giving me this. Thank you bear!
1. May 3 is national Macaron day.
Yep, we're obsessed with macarons, alright. Imagine that cities dedicate a whole day to it. Cities all around the world giveaway free macaroons during this day and 25% of the sales go to charitable organizations. So next time March 20 comes around - don't forget to treat yourself to a macaron. saying "Joyeux Jour du Macaron!" (Happy Macaron Day!)
2. Yes, there is a difference between macaron and macaroon. They're two different things.
3. The term macaron and macaroni have the same origin. The name for a type of pasta which in Italy means "fine dough".
4. While cupcake got popular with it's debut in Sex and the City, the world became obsessed with macarons after its debut on Gossip Girl.
5. Macaron is French but it was first made in Italy. It was only introduced to France circa 1553 by Italian chef Catherine de' Medici. This was at the time of her marriage to Henry III, who become king of France in 1547.
6. The coconut macaroon is more popular than any other macaroons in North America.
7. The original macaron was a small sweet cake of ground almonds, which was compared to the Italian ameretti.
Hmm... I think I'm gonna go for a macaron now. If you have any more fun facts about macarons you would love to share, comment down below! :)
A lot of people have been asking me lately how can they learn to speak in English. I, for one, couldn't answer that question because I was born into an English speaking family. I don't think I had a hard time learning the English language. So I thought about it again... and again.. and again. Finally, it hit me! I've come to realize that it doesn't depend on what language one is trying to learn. I thought about this because I personally had and still have a hard time speaking in Filipino (which is supposed to be our main language). I can't even count from 1 to 20 in Filipino. But eventually, I had to learn or else I wouldn't have survived high school. I'm in the university now and I continuously learn more about the language. I can say that I was better in speaking Filipino than I was before.
So what did I do? Well, I read Filipino books especially those with pronunciation guides. They were very helpful. Other than that, I would have an English- Filipino translator on my phone. Also, I tried to learn 10 new words a week. Of course, my friends and family taught me too. (Thank you! Hihi). Thus, to answer the question of how one can learn to speak in English - let's take baby steps first. Let's first learn new English words together.
With that, I bring you.... WORD OF THE DAY! Through research google, I was able to come up with a list of uncommonly used English words. To make it more fun, I will put them in creative (well, I try) images. Read the word, remember or just be familiar with what it means and try using it when conversing today. It proved to be helpful to me, so you can do it! Now let me present to you, today's word:
Any thoughts? Comment below! :)
Aloha! Today, I finally got my TIN number. For those who are not familiar with what a TIN is, well:
Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is an identification number used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the administration of tax laws. Click here to read more about it.
To be honest, it wasn't easy. It took me almost 4 hours to complete the filing of the documents. I'm not even finished - I have to go back tomorrow for briefing (since I'm new) and to get my official ID or something like that. Most of the time, I was also clueless with what to do. Seriously, no one told me it was that hard. :( Anyways, when I got home I decided to do a blog post about this because why not and it was so tiring for someone who isn't as familiar.
I wrote this only from what I remember so if I miss a few steps or details - sorry about that! - I still do hope these tips will be helpful to you. If you do have any questions, I suggest contacting the BIR themselves. I promise you, I am still as clueless even after today.
So yeah, I hope you find this helpful! Drop me a comment below. Take care everyone! :)
With the weather condition, I declared today as a self non-working holiday. Only then did I realized the beauty of also not working. It's good to rest and take time to do things you actually like doing. Being the computer junkie that I am, I did some research and worked on some info graphics (to be posted soon!). Plus I helped my baby sister with her homework (you know, sister duties). After that, we made loom bands, which is really addicting so expect a future post all about loom bands. I also like to spend most of my free time with the kiddos because after a few weeks, I'll only get to see them on weekends.
And to you dear reader, how was your day today? I hope you too had a productive day today. Comment below and let me know :)
In relation to the modern Rapunzel:
Too much of some things are bad, but too much of Tangled? Non-sense! I watched Tangled for n-times now. I even memorized all their songs. And occasionally, when I do paint - I paint Tangled-related art works. I guess it's safe to say I have fallen in love with Disney's Tangled. And to show my love (lol) - here are some of my Tangled paintings.
[P.S. I do not own any of the designs. I just drew and painted them.]

How about you? Have you ever gone to an extent of liking something so much? :) What is it? Comment in the box below!
I haven't been posting lately due to the weather. The recent typhoon left most parts of the country - well - powerless. So my siblings and I decided to go on a road trip. A road trip in search of wifi. And against the heavy rains (which I overlooked thus I got my new shoes wet - boo) and traffic everywhere, we finally found our spot. Thanks Bon Appetea! <3
I hope everyone stays safe! :)
I find it really funny that some of my students keep telling me I look Japanese. Filipinos would tell me the same but to be told be a Japanese, himself - I found it really (woah and) funny. And just for entertainment, here is a compilation of the funniest and best things some of students told me.
1. *sees each other for the first time* Wow. You look Japanese.
2. *student messaged me after class* I'm sorry. Today I feel bad. I notice why i feel bad. First, my English is bad. Second, I'm falling love you a little bit, because you are very beautiful and kind girl. So I couldn't think you teacher.
Oh my god. Haha. So I know. I decide that I left you. Never mind. I just want to say that you are beautiful. Good bye! I will never give up learning English.
3. Do you have a Japanese blood?
4. I think you will look like artist if you go to Japan. You are very pretty.
5. *ME: Do you have any questions?* Yes, but it is not related to the topic. *ME: Oh, okay.* Do you have a boyfriend? *ME: Yes* *he laughs* *ME: Anymore questions?* None... my heart is aching.
6. My heart is aching you have a boyfriend. :(
7. I want you and boyfriend to be over. *ME: Oh no, that cannot be* Oh okay. Then I will also be your boyfriend.
8. *after explaining to him I cannot be his boyfriend* Okay, let's go back to the lesson and stop our confirmation of love (I was like.... WHAT HAHA)
7. I want you and boyfriend to be over. *ME: Oh no, that cannot be* Oh okay. Then I will also be your boyfriend.
8. *after explaining to him I cannot be his boyfriend* Okay, let's go back to the lesson and stop our confirmation of love (I was like.... WHAT HAHA)
9. Wow. You are a very pretty when you go to Japan.
10. Even in absence of Melissa teacher glasses, it was very cute!
But seriously? Do I even look a little Japanese? :) How about you? Have you had any funny experiences lately? Leave me comment in the box below!
Today I decided to write again - no special occasion - just me, trying to blog. Maybe the title of this blog should be "Melissa tries / is trying / is really trying to blog". It would be perfect, don't you think so? But kidding aside, today I decided to write my "before the summer ends" kind of list. Starting today, I only have a month and 4 days to complete this list. Whew. Summer is ending. Nooooooo. So yeah, here it goes:
1. Get my BIR Tax payer ID. Finally, more government IDs! Actually, this is more of a need. Ever since I started working, I just remembered I needed one. But paying taxes.... no comment. It's every citizen's duty so not gonna complain.
2. Enjoy the beach. People always ask me why I love going to the beach. It's as if I am not already dark enough that I already am - but hey if you're a swimmer, you don't mind. Right? So who doesn't love the fresh air, grainy sand and clean waters? No one, no one? Good. I've been to the beach countless times this summer but I still feel the need to go enjoy the beach one last time before school starts, anyway. So hopefully, I still do.
With 4 months of summer vacation, what else was one broke girl going to do? Of course, find a *summer* job. And that’s what she did.
So here is the story of how I got my summer job:
As soon as summer started, I too, started on my job hunt. I first applied in this donut company (I won’t be naming names so you could just have your guess). You see, my uncle is a very important person in their company but even he couldn’t get me in. I found out that the application period for the summer job was already closed and that the applicants have already started working. I was too late. I thought it was over until my uncle told me that their Human Resources Manager told him a slot just magically opened and that they could start accepting - I really believed that. After sending my resume, I never heard from them again. I applied next in this very popular media conglomerate -thanks to the help of another uncle. It could have worked except for the face that they didn't pay their interns. They pay their interns with experience and school credit. Too bad I didn’t even need the credit - yep, cross that one out of the list. I then tried freelancing but I didn’t have much experience and it was hard to get the customer’s attention. I also just didn’t understand the system of the website so I just decided to give up. I also tried applying in coffee shops... and I was turned down due to my lack of experience with food (sorry for being an engineering student). This probably lasted for a month…. and this was the reason I couldn’t go out that much. I was broke - like I said earlier. My summer savings couldn’t last for four months.
Then one day, my boyfriend (he doesn't want to be called a "friend" on social media- so yes) and I were talking when he told me that I should try this job. He only told me a few details - that one must be fluent in English and be able to teach. When I got home, I opened my laptop right way and searched(googled) for it. I managed to find it. So I applied right away. I then searched tips on passing the process. I only found a few helpful tips but I was still as nervous. I just had to brave myself to thinking I can do this. The process went like this:
Initial requirements would be: Filipino, 18 y/o or above, proficient in English and can teach
1. ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TEST
I took the English proficiency test. I’ve seen many people say in forums and blogs that the exam was really hard. Good thing, I didn’t listen to them. I took the test and passed. I think the questions are really manageable and pretty basic and that anyone can do it :)
The next step was the tutoring skills assessment. But to take the TSA, I needed the following (hardware requirements):
- laptop / desktop
- headset with external microphone
- stable internet connection
I had all except for the headset with external microphone, which my parents had to buy for me (thanks mum and dad mwa)
2. TUTORING SKILLS ASSESSMENT
This part of the process is more of the "make it or break it". If you do not pass the TSA, then you have to wait for another 6 months until you can try again. I was really nervous (and because I didn't know anybody who was doing anything like this - I later found out some of my friends actually did). But then, I had no one to ask advice from. Anyways, once I have chosen my schedule for the TSA - they sent me the material to be used. AND HERE'S A TIP, if you really want to pass the TSA (and I’m sure you do), ALWAYS GO OVER THE MATERIAL WHENEVER YOU CAN. Read it and be very familiar about it. Breath the material.. (Im just kidding but you get my point). So I reviewed it every time I could. I also practiced it on my little cute siblings. They would pretend to be my Japanese students and I would pretend to be their teacher. It all went well.
The day of my TSA came. And like any other normal person, I was really nervous. I followed all instructions on the email they sent me. I went online in Skype earlier and waited. The TSA had three parts:
- Test call - They will call you to see if you have the requirements to proceed to the main part of the TSA. I was really nervous and as I was talking to the person on other line, my voice was shaking - feeling like I could ruin my chances. I know, I was overdramatic. But hey, I was nervous.
- Demo lesson - So this was it…. I did everything - like how I practiced with my little brother and sister. I smiled and smiled and tried to be friendly and smiled. I answered questions with my best efforts. Once it was over, I thought I really failed miserably. I even messaged my boyfriend right at once telling him I don’t think I was going to make it.
- Feedback - I had to wait for a few minutes until my trainer called me back.. and when he did, it was the moment of truth…. he told me I PASSED. He mentioned a lot of good points that I even think I did. (or maybe it was because of my smile). I mean, so… I did well, after all. And so he told me I passed.. I just couldn’t believe it. I was so happy that I wanted to scream while I was talking to him. But of course, I was trying to be cool about it.
After passing, I received another email from the companyI am finally a tutor. What an amazing feeling. I also couldn’t help but think that all those rejections meant that something greater was going to happen - and it did. It surely was a blessing. Other than that, I also taught myself to be brave. This really was something outside my comfort zone, I don't think I even saw myself doing this job - talking to Japanese and teaching them, but it happened and I am actually enjoying it.
I really love this job because it’s home-based. I don’t have to spend money on my lunch breaks and commuting going to the office. It also saves me a lot of time. You can also choose your schedule. You could choose how long you want to work and when. It really is convenient for me.
And it’s been 4 weeks now since I started and I learned to really love the job more. I even invited a friend of mine who was curious about it. So I helped her, gave her tips and thankfully, she also got in. And now she tells me she enjoys very much. Honestly, it used to be about the money (that’s why I wanted a job in the first place) but now it’s about helping people. My Japanese students are really (and I mean really) kind. And I love talking to them. :)
And so if you want to join or you have any questions or you want to ask for tips in passing the TSA, feel free to leave a comment with your email address or email me directly at melissaungco@gmail.com :) I would be very glad to help you!
